Sonia Gandhi officially handed the baton to senior leader Mallikarjun Kharge during a ceremony today, describing the occasion as one of “relief.” After the Gandhis withdrew from the race and Ashok Gehlot withdrew after a disaster, Mallikarjun Kharge, the first non-Gandhi to lead the Grand Old Party in 24 years, defeated Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor in a historic election for the party’s top position.

Sonia Gandhi stated that she was relieved to be released from the significant obligation the party placed on her, which she tried her best to fulfil to the best of her ability.

Prior to the event where he assumed official leadership of the Congress, Kharge paid respects to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat and also visited the tomb for former prime minister Indira Gandhi. After officially becoming the Congress president, Kharge spoke at the occasion and urged the Congressmen to “carry forward the message of Bharat Jodo Yatra to every nook and cranny of the country.”

I want to rally the members of my Congress family today to spread the Bharat Jodo Yatra’s message throughout the entire nation. The message of economic equality, preserving constitutional values, communal harmony, and providing Indian young with greater employment prospects “President of the Congress Kharge remarked.”

Let us tell the Indian people that Congress is supporting them in their struggles and aspirations, that we will be their voice, and that we will strive for the India that was envisioned by the predecessors who sacrificed their blood and sweat for the country.” said Kharge. He is all set to working towards giving the Indians a better tomorrow.
