IITs see the highest enrollment of foreign students in 2022

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) will enroll the most international students in 2022. 66 international candidates in total received admission to the IITs, according to the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced report. This is the highest it has been in the previous five years.

There haven’t been more than 10 foreign nationals admitted to IITs in the previous five years. Industry analysts have linked the recent modification in the definition of foreign nationals applying for professional courses in India to the dramatic rise in enrollment.

Following the government’s March 2021 gazette, Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) are now considered foreign nationals for admission to government institutions. The OCI and PIO candidates are now eligible for JEE (Advanced) and the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JOSAA) for seat allocation in IITs, just as foreign nationals, thanks to this government directive.

The OCI and PIO students will receive supernumerary seats in IITs with higher fees in accordance with the law. The extra seats that have been permitted by the government above and beyond the authorized intake are known as supernumerary seats. For the purpose of admission to Indian government institutions, OCI and PIO students used to be treated as Indian nationals. Prior to the new regulation, each program allowed foreigners to fill up to 10% of the extra seats. The government added 66 additional seats at IITs in 2022 for international applicants.

One of the IIT Bombay professors reacted on the increase in enrollment by speculating that these foreigners could be typical Indian students who have passports from other nations for a variety of reasons. Prior to that, they had to fight for a set number of seats designated for Indian citizens.
